Who are YOU Competing with?

I’ve heard several social media commentators recently saying that followers, constantly receive the false notion that ‘others’ lives are perfect. They are ALWAYS travelling, having fun, super-slim or muscular and are immensely popular.

You can sink into a rut believing that you are boring or a failure with these unreasonable comparisons.

Just between you and me, I can confess to sometimes feeling frustrated, in comparison, that we haven’t yet achieved the echelons of some of the icons in the American health club industry.

In sport and in commerce we obviously have comparisons because there are easily recognised measures, like, first, second or third place or perhaps ‘who made the most sales’ this month. But earlier in January I received an epiphany.  A truer and healthier satisfaction might come simply by competing with yourself!

You could set targets to compete with yourself in small bite-sized chunks. As far as the gym goes, forget about what the others are doing.

  • What did YOU do last week?
  • And how could YOU move that up just one percent?
  • If you wear MYZONE and normally train in the Blue, can you get to the Green for 2-minutes?
  • If you are about to do bench press, can you add just one-kilo a side to your normal lift?  
  • If you normally exercise two days a week, can you bump it up to three?
  • If there are five big jobs waiting for you at home, could you start by completing just ONE?
  • Or at work, if you sold nine last week, can you compete with yourself to make ten?

Wanting to match other’s expectations and images is often unrealistic. But when you begin competing with yourself you will enjoy a much more satisfying time in life.
