Farmer picking organic garden produce.

Better to grow carrots than cows?

Did you know that the food choices you make today will not only impact your own health, but the health, environment and sustainability of our planet? First, by choosing whole foods rather than highly processed foods you reduce your carbon footprint and promote biodiversity.

Plant based diets especially, play a crucial role in this shift. Plants typically require fewer resources and generate lower greenhouse gas emissions, while fostering a healthier population.

Consider the use of one hectare of land. You could feed 22 people by growing wheat, 19 by growing rice or 17 people per hectare per year by growing potatoes. Whereas the same hectare of land used for beef production would feed just one to two people!

What about water usage? Beef production requires 15,000 litres of water per kilogram produced. Whereas wheat would require 1000 litres per kilogram, rice between 3000 to 5,000 litres and potatoes just 500 litres per kilogram.

With a few slight changes to your weekly food sources, you could positively improve your own health AND contribute towards a more sustainable future.
