John Bonham’s last hours alive a lesson to all.

With a number of Platinum Albums, the members of heavy rock band Led Zeppelin had more money than they could wish for. The drummer, John Bonham, was said to be one of the best in the world. He had an original style and skill, able to lace irregular changes and beats to accompany the lead guitarist, Jimmy Page.

No strangers to fame or to massive cheering crowds, and with musical skills envied by all, you wouldn’t expect John to be suffering anxiety. He had greater success than most could imagine. John had recently purchased a sprawling country retreat for his family. But the band’s manager wanted the group to tour the USA. John and Jimmy both didn’t want to go. The manager, however, tricked them into agreeing to a short two-week stint of concerts. Although, behind the scenes the manipulative manager had at least a month booked up.

John was to drive up to London for a practice session with the band. Yet his anxiety about going to America was at an all-time high. His driver collected him at 10am, but when passing a local pub, John insisted that they stop. Then over the course of the next 90 minutes he consumed Vodka Screwdrivers, at the rate equivalent to ‘ a shot every 75 seconds.

By the time he arrived late at the practice, he could barely stand. The following hour was a challenge with John falling off his drum stool three times. Jimmy Page finally called it quits on the practice suggesting that they meet again the next day “when things are more settled”.

John returned to his estate, still intoxicated and in an unpleasant frame of mind. He raved and complained to his family about the stress of having to go to America. He continued to ingest more Vodka.

His assistant later carried him to bed, laid him on his side and left.

Morning came and John was dead.

I was a fan of Led Zeppelin. And this sad account struck me with a profound message.  That ‘anxiety’ is something that can strike anyone, from the everyday person living in suburban Te Atatu, to the most famous and successful in the world.

Our success doesn’t mean that we are immune to anxiety any more than anybody else. The solution can seem just as elusive  and the impact just as devastating. Let’s try to be understanding, patient and compassionate with those in need.

John sought to mask his challenges with Vodka, simultaneously making life uncomfortable for all those who cared about him. Better though, if you find yourself in need, is to find a skillful professional to help you walk through it, and to leave it behind.

For the last three months Club Physical has supported Anxiety NZ. This could be a service you might need.
