We’re breeding a culture of speed. Everything needs to come fast. Since the advent of mobile phones our attention spans have generally fallen from 12 seconds to just 8. This desire for wanting things ‘now’ might be seen in the ditching of a New Year’s Resolution. When the results don’t come fast enough, you quit? We sometimes overestimate what we can achieve in the short-term, then become disgruntled and give up. But similarly, we underestimate what we can do in the long-term. The three enemies of progress are;
- Striving for perfection. You set yourself up for disappointment
- Failing to appreciate and to celebrate ‘bite sized progress’.
- Allowing other distractions to cause you to miss your workouts for example. Or it could be that you eat healthily one day; the next you overindulge in takeaways. But if this does happen, don’t punish yourself, start again.
The key thing to remember is what you do today will shape your tomorrow. Time is not on your side. Learn to manage your health goals as if you are preparing to compete in the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Focus on today with view to where you want to be tomorrow.
